OXNARD, CA—The Dallas Cowboys’ first padded practice of training camp in Oxnard, California was a startling sight: empty stands that led fans and critics alike to wonder if the team’s popularity had tanked.
Social media blasted team owner Jerry Jones for the low attendance, and it did turn out to be Jerry’s fault. Unbeknownst to most, Jones had reserved the seats for his high school reunion, which he personally organized.
Unfortunately, Jones's former classmates weren't as enthusiastic as he was. With only three attendees, including a confused hot dog vendor, the event was a spectacular flop.
"I thought everyone would want to see how far I've come," Jones reportedly said while brushing off the embarrassment and gesturing to the vast emptiness of the stands. "Turns out, they were busy…or maybe they just got lost. Or honestly, some are Giants fans."
Social media erupted with jokes about the ghostly stands, with many poking fun at the notion that the empty seats were a metaphor for Jones’ reluctance to spend big on star players. “Looks like Jerry’s reunion was a bigger bust than his offseason negotiations with Dak and CeeDee Lamb,” tweeted one fan.
Meanwhile, Jones remains hopeful that his next event, “Grandparents' Day at the Stadium,” will be a better draw.
