DALLAS—Cowboys Head Coach Mike McCarthy gave reporters an unexpected scoop about what excites him most about the preseason game against the LA Rams. Despite inquiries about his evaluations of players like quarterback Trey Lance, McCarthy candidly confessed that his favorite part of the game is seeing himself on TV.
As a child growing up in Pittsburgh, McCarthy dreamed that being on TV was the epitome of fame and success. “To me, it was like being a superhero,” he said with a nostalgic grin. “Even now, as a 60-year-old man, I can’t wait to watch the taped broadcast just to see myself on the screen. I just wish PopPop could see me now.” Presumably a reference to a now deceased grandfather.
Fans became audibly concerned when McCarthy revealed that he doesn’t bother with analyzing formations or blocking schemes when reviewing film; instead choosing to entirely focus on his personal enjoyment from watching himself “looking like a real coach with a headset” on the sidelines. “Every time I see myself on TV, I giggle like a little kid,” he said. “It never gets old.”
As McCarthy exited the press conference he likely embarrassed opposing coach Sean McVay when he volunteered the Rams coach had confided in him that he also is most concerned with being on television. Furthermore, McCarthy speculated that primetime audiences and highly rated playoff games are McVay’s primary motivation to make it to the postseason.
